Abstract

Bringing new life into the world is a beautiful journey. Today’s fast-paced and stressful lifestyle, combined with the dual responsibilities often managed by women, has led to a sharp rise in cases of infertility and pregnancy loss. Hence, many couples are facing the challenge of being unable to have children. Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is becoming increasingly common. It is defined as the sequence of two or more spontaneous abortions before 20 weeks of pregnancy. The causes of RPL are complex and not always easy to identify. Among the various causes, luteal phase defect (LPD) is one such condition where the corpus luteum does not produce enough progesterone to support the growth and implantation of the embryo, ultimately leading to early miscarriage. In Ayurveda, this condition can be compared to Puthraghni yonivyapad mentioned by brihathrayees. Acharya Charaka quotes that vayu aggravated due to predominance of ruksha properties in the body repeatedly destroys the fetus conceived along with the vitiated raktha. This article looks into how LPD relates to puthraghni yonivyapad and explores how ayurvedic treatments may offer supportive care for the women experiencing RPL caused by LPD.
