Background: Moringa oleifera (Sigru) is widely used in Ayurveda for conditions involving anemia (Pandu roga, Rakthakshaya), muscle wasting, Dourbalya (general weakness), nervous debility, and fatigue. Preclinical and ethnobotanical evidence support its broad nutritional, anti-inflammatory, metabolic, and neuroprotective potential.
Objective: This Phase I open-label pilot study evaluated the safety and preliminary clinical utility of a proprietary Ayurvedic formulation containing M. oleifera leaf and seed extract for managing symptoms traditionally associated with tissue depletion and weakness.
Materials and Methods: Participants presenting with anemia-related symptoms, general weakness, muscle wasting, nervous debility, and fatigue were assessed for baseline severity and monitored for clinical response. Outcomes were analyzed across age groups to explore patterns of responsiveness.
Results: The formulation was well tolerated, with no dropouts or safety concerns. Positive trends were observed across all evaluated symptom categories. Improvements in Rakthakshaya and Paanduroga suggest potential benefits for hematological functioning, while reductions in muscle wasting and general weakness indicate possible musculoskeletal and systemic support. Fatigue and nervous debility showed notable improvement, consistent with the antioxidant and neuroprotective properties documented for M. oleifera. Younger participants demonstrated slightly faster response rates (85%), while older participants also showed substantial improvement (75–83%). Approximately 80% of participants exhibited very good overall improvement.
Conclusion: Findings from this pilot study demonstrate good safety, acceptability, and encouraging clinical responses, providing preliminary support for the therapeutic potential of this M. oleifera–based Proprietary Ayurvedic Medicine. These results justify the need for larger, controlled trials to validate efficacy and elucidate mechanisms.
